We excavate to a minimum depth of 200mm, lay a geotextile membrane to prevent sub-base migration, and compact at least 150mm of MOT Type 1 aggregate in layers. Edge courses are haunched with concrete for permanent restraint, and only then are the blocks laid, cut and sanded.

For driveways that bear vehicle weight, herringbone is the strongest pattern because the 45-degree interlock resists the turning and braking forces that cause other patterns to creep. Stretcher bond is suitable for pathways and light-use areas. We will advise on the best pattern for your specific usage during the site survey.
Block paving installed on a properly prepared sub-base of at least 150mm MOT Type 1, with correct edge restraints and kiln-dried jointing sand, will typically last 20 to 30 years. The blocks themselves are manufactured to last 40+ years, so the durability of the driveway depends almost entirely on the quality of the groundworks beneath.
Some weed growth in block paving joints is inevitable over time as airborne seeds germinate in the sand, but it is easily managed. We recommend re-sanding the joints with kiln-dried sand every two to three years and applying a joint-stabilising sealer, which dramatically reduces weed growth and helps maintain the structural interlock.
Yes. Block paving performs well on gradients up to around 1 in 10, provided the sub-base is correctly prepared and the edge courses are adequately restrained. For steeper slopes we may recommend a herringbone pattern for additional interlock strength, or an alternative surface such as resin bound for very steep driveways.
Absolutely. We install permeable block paving systems from Marshalls and Brett that allow water to drain through the joints into a porous sub-base, satisfying SUDS requirements.
