Sandstone patios - natural warmth and character

Indian sandstone is the most popular natural stone paving in the UK, and it is not hard to see why. The warm, earthy tones, the riven surface texture and the fact that every single slab is unique give a sandstone patio a character and warmth that no manufactured product can match. For period properties, cottage gardens and traditional homes across Stoke-on-Trent and the nearby Staffordshire towns, sandstone is often the natural choice.

We install sandstone patios using premium-grade Indian sandstone from reputable suppliers, in a full range of colour blends including Raj Green, Autumn Brown, Kandla Grey, Mint and Black Kandla. Each slab is laid on a full mortar bed over a properly prepared sub-base, with weatherpoint or traditional sand-and-cement pointing to suit your preference.

Unlike budget installations where sandstone is spot-bedded (mortar only at the corners), we full-bed every slab. This means no hollow voids beneath the stone where water can collect and freeze, and no risk of slabs rocking or cracking underfoot. It takes longer and costs a little more, but it is the difference between a patio that lasts five years and one that lasts thirty.

Why choose sandstone

The benefits in detail

Natural beauty & variation

Every sandstone slab is unique, with natural colour banding, fossil traces and riven texture that give your patio a character no manufactured surface can replicate.

Wide colour range

Choose from classic Raj Green, warm Autumn Brown, golden Kandla Grey, striking Mint Sandstone or the dramatic dark tones of Black Kandla, each with its own personality.

Riven, slip-resistant surface

The naturally riven surface of Indian sandstone provides excellent grip underfoot, making it a practical choice for family gardens and areas around pools and ponds.

Excellent value

Indian sandstone offers the look and feel of natural stone at a highly competitive price point, making it the most popular natural stone patio surface in the UK.

Ages gracefully

Sandstone develops a subtle patina over time that many find adds to its character. With periodic cleaning and re-sealing, a sandstone patio looks better with age.

Versatile styling

Sandstone suits both traditional cottage gardens and contemporary outdoor spaces, available in natural cleft, honed and tumbled finishes to match your aesthetic.

Got questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, we recommend sealing Indian sandstone with a quality impregnating sealer after installation and re-sealing every three to four years. Sealing protects the stone from staining, reduces algae growth and enhances the natural colour. We handle sealing as part of the installation process.

Calibrated sandstone has been mechanically leveled to a consistent thickness (usually 22mm), making it faster and cheaper to lay. Uncalibrated sandstone retains its natural varying thickness, which requires a deeper mortar bed and more skill to level, but offers a more authentic, traditional appearance. We lay both, depending on your preference and budget.

Indian sandstone is a natural product, and some subtle fading can occur over many years of UV exposure, particularly in the darker colour blends. This is part of the natural weathering process that many find adds character. A quality penetrating sealer will slow this process and keep the colours richer for longer.

We only source Indian sandstone from suppliers who can demonstrate ethical sourcing, including fair wages, safe working conditions and independent audits of their quarries in India. We can provide documentation on the provenance of your paving if this is important to you.

A sandstone patio laid on a properly prepared sub-base with full mortar bed pointing will last 30 years or more. The stone itself is virtually indestructible, so the lifespan of the patio depends on the quality of the groundworks. Our installations are built to the same exacting sub-base standards as our driveways.
