Not when the driveway is correctly installed. We lay a cellular stabilisation grid beneath the gravel that holds each stone in its cell, preventing the rutting and migration that plagues cheap gravel driveways. The grid also distributes vehicle weight, so the surface remains level even under regular use.
We recommend a 10mm to 20mm angular gravel for driveways. Angular stones interlock better than rounded pebbles, creating a more stable surface. Very fine gravel (under 6mm) sticks to tyres and gets walked into the house, while very large stones are uncomfortable to walk on and difficult to drive over.
Gravel requires more light maintenance than other surfaces - occasional raking to keep the surface level, weed control, and topping up the stones every few years. However, with a stabilisation grid and weed membrane, maintenance is minimal compared to a gravel drive laid directly onto soil.
Gravel driveways are best suited to relatively flat ground. On slopes steeper than 1 in 15, gravel will migrate downhill over time, even with a stabilisation grid. For sloped driveways we typically recommend resin bound, tarmac or block paving instead, and we will advise on this during your site survey.
After the sub-base and stabilisation grid are installed, we lay gravel to a depth of approximately 50mm above the grid. This provides enough coverage to fully conceal the grid while keeping the stones deep enough within the cells to resist movement under vehicle tyres.
