Natural stone has a depth and variation that manufactured products can only approximate. Each slab carries the geological history of where it was quarried - the colour banding, the fossil traces, the subtle differences in texture. For homeowners who want a patio that is genuinely unique, natural stone is the only choice.
Every natural stone patio we install is laid on a full solid mortar bed over a properly prepared sub-base. We never spot-bed. This is particularly important with natural stone, where the variation in slab thickness can create voids if the mortar is not fully supporting the underside. Full bedding means your patio will remain solid, level and crack-free for decades, regardless of the stone you choose.

Most natural stones benefit from sealing after installation, and periodic re-sealing every three to five years. Limestone and sandstone are porous and should always be sealed. Granite and slate are denser and less porous but still benefit from a penetrating sealer to protect against staining and make cleaning easier.
The cost varies significantly depending on the stone chosen. Indian sandstone is the most affordable natural stone option, while York stone, granite and premium limestone are at the higher end. We provide a fixed, itemised quote after the site survey that includes all materials, groundworks, laying, pointing and sealing.
Some natural stones are suitable for driveway use, particularly granite and certain limestones, provided they are thick enough (minimum 30mm) and laid on an appropriate sub-base. Sandstone and slate are generally too soft or brittle for vehicle loads. We will advise on the right stone for your intended use during the survey.
York stone is a genuine sandstone quarried in Yorkshire, prized for its warm, weathered appearance and exceptional durability. It is the traditional paving stone of Northern England and has a character that only centuries of weathering can produce. Reclaimed York stone is increasingly rare and expensive, but new York stone is still quarried and offers a similar character for period properties.
