Porcelain patios - modern outdoor living
Porcelain paving has revolutionised the patio market in recent years, and for good reason. It offers the beauty and texture of natural stone with none of the maintenance drawbacks, making it the surface of choice for homeowners across Stoke-on-Trent, the nearby Staffordshire towns and Staffordshire who want a stunning, low-maintenance outdoor space.
The key advantage of porcelain is its vitrified, non-porous structure. Because it absorbs less than 0.5% of its weight in water, porcelain cannot be damaged by frost, will not stain from wine or oil, and does not need sealing. A simple wash with soapy water is all the maintenance a porcelain patio requires, year after year.
We install porcelain patios using large-format slabs from leading manufacturers including London Stone, Natural Paving and Pavestone. Each slab is laid on a full bed of exterior-grade adhesive over a properly prepared concrete or MOT base, with careful attention to fall and drainage so that surface water never pools. The result is a crisp, contemporary patio that looks as good in ten years as it does on day one.
Why choose porcelain
The benefits in detail
Stain & scratch resistant
Vitrified porcelain is non-porous, so wine, oil, BBQ grease and garden chemicals simply wipe away. It will not stain, etch or absorb water the way natural stone can.
Frost & weather proof
Porcelain absorbs less than 0.5% water, so it cannot be damaged by freeze-thaw cycles. It is the lowest-maintenance patio surface available for the UK climate.
Large format tiles
We lay porcelain in large format slabs up to 900x900mm, creating a sleek, contemporary look with minimal grout lines that suits modern garden designs perfectly.
Realistic stone & wood effects
Modern porcelain reproduces the texture and colour variation of natural stone, marble and even timber with astonishing realism, but without any of the drawbacks.
Slip resistant
Quality outdoor porcelain is textured during manufacture to provide grip in wet conditions, making it a safe choice for family gardens and pool surrounds.
Colour never fades
The colour in porcelain is baked into the body of the tile during manufacture, not applied to the surface, so it will not fade or weather even after decades of sun exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quality outdoor porcelain is manufactured with a textured or riven surface that provides genuine slip resistance in wet conditions. Look for a product rated R11 or higher for outdoor use. We only install porcelain specifically designed and rated for external use, so your patio will be safe in all weathers.
Porcelain is harder, denser and completely non-porous, so it resists staining, frost damage and fading far better than natural stone. It is also more consistent in colour and thickness, which makes for cleaner grout lines and a more uniform finish. Natural stone has a unique, unpredictable character that some prefer, but porcelain wins on durability and ease of maintenance.
If your existing concrete or paving base is structurally sound, level and correctly drained, porcelain can be laid over it using exterior-grade tile adhesive. If the existing surface is cracked, uneven or poorly drained, we will need to excavate and lay a fresh sub-base. We assess this during the site survey.
Outdoor porcelain is available in a wide range of sizes, from 600x600mm to large format 900x900mm and even 1200x600mm planks. Larger formats create a sleek, modern look with fewer grout lines, while smaller formats suit traditional garden designs. We can show you samples and discuss the best size for your space.
Porcelain is the easiest patio surface to maintain. A simple sweep and occasional wash with soapy water is all that is needed. Unlike natural stone, porcelain does not require sealing, and because it is non-porous, algae and moss struggle to take hold. A pressure washer on a low setting can be used for a deeper clean.
